Abstract

|
The amateur, like the professional SCUBA diver, must. have a good grasp of the biologic and physical aspects of diving. The sports diver should recognize that he possesses only an overview of diving. While most amateur divers are enthusiastic and fortuitously survive in a-hazardous, potentially lethal environment, there are no substitutes for the stringently supervised training and extended experience of the professional diver. It is therefore necessary, that judgment and restraint based on accurate knowledge be exercises by the sports diver, as they are by the professional.
This review presents the more important biologic and physical aspects of SCUBA diving in summary form. The principal subjects covered in this primer are physical fitness, physical laws, related to diving anatomy and physiology of especial importance in diving, aquatic environmental hazards, diver¢¥s diseases and injuries, and decompression and diving tabes.
